Goddess Brahmacharini - The Goddess of Penance

Navratri is celebrated to worship Goddess Durga and her myriad forms in all its glory. This festival is charismatically celebrated for 9 days, dedicating each day to her 9 incarnations.

Brahmacharini is the 2nd incarnation of Mother Durga who is worshipped on the 2nd day of Navratri.

                            या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Yaa Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Brahmacharini Rupena Samsthita

                                           Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah

With Courage in her heart, Flame in her eyes, An Insatiable desire to make her dream come true, And undying love for him, she's the embodiment of the Goddess Brahmacharini oozing with confidence, competence and courage. The true descendants of Goddess Brahmacharini are the ones whose stories chronicles a tale of hardships, devotion & dedication.

So, who could be a real-life #ModernAvatar of Devi Bramacharini?

Well, she could be anyone who refused to follow the societal norms and paved their own way to success and glory.

Bhog -

Traditional unsalted butter and sugar are offered to the Devi to receive her eternal blessings. Fruits and sweets are also offered along with garlands of lotus and hibiscus flowers during her worship. After the prayers, the bhog (prasad) is offered to unmarried women who symbolize Goddess Durga herself.

The Legend has it -

  • Goddess Brahmacharini is extremely radiant and majestic.

  • This Devi is the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati born at the home of Daksha Prajapati.

  • She holds a rosary in her right hand and a Kamandalu in her left, having taken up a severe form of penance to attain Lord Shiva as her consort.

  • Devi Brahmacharini resides at Swadisthan chakra, and when she is worshipped with sheer reverence, she helps you to get rid of negativity and blesses you with prosperity, happiness, peace, wisdom, and success.

  • Brahmacharini blesses us with great emotional strength, perseverance, tremendous will power and confidence in the most trying times of our lives.

  • Shiva represents the “soul”(self) and Goddess Durga represents the “mind”. With self-control and penance, the mind conquers the self to understand our true essence, just like how Devi Brahmacharini through rigorous penance united with Lord Shiva.

  • The color “Royal blue” worn on this second day by devotees is synchronizing with calm and powerful energy.

The Modern Avataar -

Irrespective of the emotional affliction & social austerity - the one which could only be understood if you or I live through it, she chose to walk in the cramped & not-so-comfortable shoes of her beloved husband.

While everyone mourned the loss, she chose to pay tribute by wearing his stars and uniform to keep the legacy of their martyred husbands alive.

And so we would like to honour a few valiant & valorous women who feared not to stroll in the line of fire, knowing very well that any day could be their last.

Garima Abrol, the wife of martyred squadron leader Samir Abrol, lost her husband in a Mirage 2000 aircraft crash, she decided to put the step up and join the Indian Air Force to keep his legacy alive and ablaze for years to come.

Sangeeta Mall, Neeru Sambyal, Gauri Prasad Mahadik are a few other names which glisten like a shining star as they didn't lose herself to the grief after the tragic loss of their spouse but rose high to high altitudes and wore the stars and uniform of their martyred husbands.

It's not a common choice after such a tragic loss and not many of us bear the courage to leave the comforts of our home and walk in the footsteps of a warrior. We wish they fly high enough and never see a day of disquiet & distress. Let us applaud and acknowledge #womeninuniform.
