Goddess Mahagauri - The Goddess of Peace & Endurance

The 8th day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri.

  • Goddess Mahagauri is compared to the conch, moon and white flower of Kunda due to her fair complexion.
  • She is also called Swethambardhara as she is always clad in white clothes.
  • Goddess Mahagauri blesses her devotees with the qualities of peace and endurance.
  • Kanya Pooja is performed on this day with great reverence, as 9 young girls are invited home for they are considered as 9 forms of Goddess Durga. Their feet are washed and adorned with a tilak on their foreheads. They are served puri, halwa, black chana, etc and are gifted benevolently.
  • The pink color is significant to this day as it symbolizes hope, confidence, and a fresh start.

                                    या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ महागौरी रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Mahagauri Rupena Samsthita।

                                                Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah॥

Goddess Parvati in order to beget Lord Shiva as her husband underwent severe penance in the forest braving storms, drought, severe heat and cold. The ravages of nature made her complexion dark with time. Lord Shiva pleased with her austerity agreed to marry her. He unleashed the holy Ganges from his matted hair to wash all the accumulated dirt on her body. This caused her to become white-complexioned and luminous. Thus she came to be called Mahagauri (extremely fair).

Bhog to Mahagauri

Coconut is offered with love to Mahagauri on Ashtami. It is believed donating coconuts to Brahmins on this day, can fulfill the desire of a childless couple with a child. Fresh unboiled milk, sweets made from mawa, black chana, and fresh jasmine flowers are offered with a pious heart.

Modern Day Avatar

And we surmise, She's the one you can easily recognize. A modern-day, real-life #ModernAvatar of Devi Mahagauri lives in every house.

She's fair as a conch, She's pure as the Ganges, She's serene & calm as winter sunset. She's gentle as the cold breeze in warm summer; She's secret as a nest of nightingales; She's refulgent like a rising sun of a midsummer day.

As she depicts light, she gleams out the afflictions and mizzle us with material prosperity & spiritual attainments.

To acknowledge a real-life #ModernAvatar of Devi MahaGauri, we think it's best to appreciate the women who consider & carries on the household chores, also attending her spouse's mead & need. Yes, she's your little woman.

She forgets all her comforts, braves the good, the bad and the ugly and eliminate the evil from our lives. Her every-day penance is what seems sacred and rare - a divine love which can't be found elsewhere.

She believes to live through the lives of others, her relentless efforts are committed to her husband, her reach of arms, her heart and soul is devoted only to her other half. She stands in your shadows, feeding your confidence with strength and hope.

Indeed, she's worthy of being treated like a Goddess; #Goddess MahaGauri and no less! At last, in the words of John Keats, we would like to conclude - that She'll -

Let me not wander in a barren dream,
But when I am consumed in the Fire,
Give me new Phoenix wings to fly at my desire.
